Oh Deer Korean Fusion – CBD – Royal Lane [Lunch Crawl]

With the popularity of Korean cuisine and Kimchi appearing on just about anything from burgers to fries, Melbournians are happily welcoming Korean fusion with open arms (Looking at you Chimac!). Located in an inconspicuous location away from curious eyes, Oh Deer has been busy spreading the word online through Groupon and made sure their presence is known to all.

As keen Groupon warriors Benno and Tammy were curious and invited me along to see what Oh Deer has to offer. There’s always room for some Korean Fusion in Melbourne.

I love a good pun and it seems the owners at Oh Deer love them too and has transformed this space within Tivoli Arcade into a quirky, fun place to visit for a quick bite or a relaxing dinner. Benno and Tammy purchased a Groupon deal for $12 which entitled them to a side, main and a drink (pretty good value!) and I decided to choose from their standard lunch menu.

Benno’s main – Fresh Salmon Salad over Rice
My Lunch Bento with Spicy Pork (comes with Soup and Dumpling) – $10
Spicy pork!
Tammy’s main – Dokbokki (Rice cakes)
Strawberry Fried Chicken – $15

Benno’s order: Salmon salad over rice, hot chips and a Strawberry Punch.

Tammy’s order: Dokbokki, Kimchi and a Lychee Punch.

There was a bit of a mix up and the chips and kimchi didn’t arrive until after we finished off our meals but staff were very apologetic. Sorry, I  don’t have the photos for the sides but if you tasted chips and kimchi you’ll know what to expect. Benno mentioned the Salmon was fresh and Tammy was hoping for a bigger portion for the Dokbokki main but commented it was tasty nonetheless.

My bento was extremely good value considering you get your proteins, dumpling action and a refreshing seaweed soup to wash it all down. For a tenner, Oh Deer is in the market to give surrounding competition a run for their money.

As we perused the menu, we saw Strawberry Fried Chicken. What. We needed this in our lives. Right now.The chicken was tossed generously in a subtle Strawberry sauce that is served usually spicy, but both Benno and Tammy are chilli-sensitive so we went with the mild version instead. Stick to your ribs sauce but delicious and can be on the sweeter side as with most Korean sauces.

For value, Oh Deer is definitely high on the rankings for your lunch time needs. I would like to come back to try other meals and I have seen people raving about the coconut ribs.
