Moo! Moo! Pho – CBD – Elizabeth St [Lunch Crawl]

I’m either looking in the wrong place but it’s really hard to find a decent bowl of Bun Bo Hue in the CBD. Moo Moo’s appear to be family owned and have fused both traditional Vietnamese fare with some twisty burgers in the mix. One half of the menu offers an array of dishes you’ll find at any Vietnamese restaurant and the other half an experimental burger menu that swaps your beef patty with fillings such as, Nem Nuong (grilled pork ball), chicken satay and more. There’s also the ‘Pho-gur’ for those that can’t decide whether to have Pho or a burger.

Taro’s Bun Rieu (Crab and Tomato Noodle Soup) – $11.90

Taro’s Bun Rieu was surprising because I’ve never seen the dish with crab meat balls. That’s not to say it was necessarily a bad thing, because Taro didn’t hate it all. I’m not a fan of Bun Rieu but Moo Moo’s rendition didn’t look half a bad. If only they used the thicker Vermicelli then just maybe, I’d be a changed man..

Mighty Moo-ster (Soft-shell crab) – $12.50

The Mighty Moo-ster was a mouthful of crunch, a little sweet and freshness. The soft-shell crab was crunchy and juicy and the overall flavours, especially the slice of apple just worked. It felt less of a filling fatty burger and more of light and refreshing salad that happened to have a deep fried crustacean in the middle.

Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Beef Noodle Soup) – $11.90

Moo Moo’s BBH was good. Not life changing or questioning my existence good but mighty decent. The broth was flavourful (by CBD standards) and didn’t taste like it was 100% MSG. The cuts of beef were solid and the just cooked beef was different and uncommon as this was a Pho thing, I thought. I’m not complaining, more beef is better than no beef.

BBH 101 – your bowl must be inundated with a moderate amount of chilli oil.

I was a bit sad that there wasn’t a layer of chilli oil when my BBH arrived but when life gives you lemons, you douse it. With chilli oil. If you’re not into chilli like I am, I would advise against this doing this (especially if you have a weak stomach, the next morning will not be awesome).

I have a feeling this won’t be my last visit to Moo Moo’s. Looking around you see most CBD warriors happily chomping on burgers while the other half on Vietnamese fare. Judging from what I’ve seen, I’ll be more than happy to come back for other fixings!
